Staff - Getting Started with Wallet Access (NFC)

Understand what Wallet Access supports, which hardware is compatible, and what’s required before enabling NFC on locks.

Written by Support

Wallet Access allows residents and staff to unlock doors by tapping a smartphone or smartwatch against the lock using Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

This guide covers the requirements, hardware compatibility, and necessary preparations before installing Wallet Access at your property.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Key Concepts (Shared Vocabulary)

Before beginning, please review these terms to ensure clear communication between staff and installers:

  • Wallet Access: A feature that allows users to unlock doors by tapping their device against the lock without opening the Quext app. It works offline and, on supported devices, even when the battery is depleted.

  • Wallet Credential: The secure digital key stored within the user's Apple or Google Wallet account.

  • Sync / Synchronization: The process by which a lock downloads access data. This happens automatically via a thermostat hub (within minutes) or must be triggered manually via the Quext app.

  • NFC Configuration Card: A physical card commissioned by Allegion specifically for your property. It must be scanned against a lock within 60 seconds of a power cycle to enable the feature.

  • Installer Credential: A valid Wallet Credential loaded onto an installer's or staff member's device, used to test and verify that the lock is recognizing NFC signals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What Wallet Access Does NOT Do

To manage resident and staff expectations, please note the following limitations:

It does not grant access instantly: After a resident adds the key to their wallet, the lock must sync (download the data) before the key will work. This is not instantaneous.

It does not work with all systems: Wallet Access is not compatible with PDK, Brivo, or non-NFC Allegion locks.

It does not guarantee "Dead Battery" access on all phones: While iPhone users with "Express Mode" enabled can access units for hours after their battery dies, this feature varies by Android model and settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Compatibility & Operating System Requirements

Wallet access is available on most modern smartphones and wearables that support contactless payments.

  • iPhone: iPhone 8 or newer, running a current version of iOS with Apple Wallet

  • Android: NFC-enabled Android phones running Android 9 or newer with Google Wallet

  • Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 4 or newer (paired with a compatible iPhone)

  • Android Wearables: Wear OS watches with NFC and Google Wallet support

Tip: If your phone or watch can make contactless payments, it will work for tap-to-unlock.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Supported Hardware

Wallet Access is designed for specific Allegion/Schlage hardware. No lock replacement is required if you are using compatible models, but they must be physically configured.

Compatible Locks

  • Schlage XE360

  • Schlage Control

  • Schlage NDEB

  • Schlage LEB

  • Supported Reader Controllers (RCs)

Incompatible Hardware

  • PDK systems

  • Brivo systems

  • Older, non-NFC Allegion locks

Prerequisites for Installation

Before scheduling an installation or rollout, ensure you have the following:

  1. Commissioned NFC Configuration Cards You must have physical NFC Configuration Cards issued by Allegion specifically for your property.

    1. Note: On Allegion support forms, these may be labeled as "Student ID" or "Resident Key."

    2. Warning: If these cards are missing, do not attempt installation. Contact support immediately.

  2. Installer Credential (Test Device) The person performing the installation must have the Quext app installed on their phone and a valid Wallet Credential loaded into their Apple or Google Wallet. You cannot verify that NFC is working without a live credential to test against the lock.

  3. Latest Firmware Locks must be updated to the latest firmware to support NFC. Most locks installed in the last 1-2 years likely have compatible firmware, but this should be confirmed by the Quext team or your installer.

  4. Enabled in Quext Platform Wallet Access is an add-on feature. Ensure your Customer Success Manager (CSM) has enabled the "Wallet" feature for your community in the Quext backend before you begin.
